It could be a bad interaction with `s-i-p' --- try turning it off and see if
the problem goes away.  (I use `s-i-p' with Gnus all the time without any
problem, but I know that Gnus' scrolling code isn't entirely compatible with
`s-i-p'.)

Do you have `scroll-on-clipped-lines' set to `t (the default)?  If so, you may
be being bitten by a bad interaction between `scroll-on-clipped-lines' and
`s-i-p'.  Set `scroll-on-slipped-lines' to nil and see if the problem goes
away.

(See why `s-i-p' isn't yet the default?)
