It's good that someone is doing work on cperl-mode.el.  I did some
work on this in the past, and I came to the same conclusion - that
there was a lot of promise, but work was needed.  I have communicated
with the author, Ilya Zakharevitch <ilya@math.ohio-state.edu>, but
it's difficult since he is not an XEmacs user, and cannot be since he
uses a non-Unix platform (OS/2, IIRC).  Ilya made some unusual user
interface decisions that I disagreed with.

So please Karl, try to either send changes back to Ilya, or try to
make it easier to re-merge changes in the future when Ilya's next
release comes out.
