Yes, your description is right on, never thought about it being "redraw on each
keystroke" but that explain a lot.  I also use mode-motion+, which slows down
about 50% when there are two screens up.  So the problem is more general than
keystokes.

Well any time ya want to come over we can turn "turbo" of on my 486 linux box
and you can see it in spades.  (I'm serious steve).
