Gnus and the "Symbol's function definition is void" was my mistake. I
changed my .emacs file and Gnus is fine. The reason for this was that
I was using the lisp files for Mule-2.3 instead of using the files
that came with XEmacs.

Could someone please tell me what the compface library is?
Things seem to be OK without it though.

I haven't done much testing with japanese. I hope to have the new
initialization file for XEmacs ready soon.
