Subject: Interaction between VM and regular windows

In XEmacs 20.3 "Berlin" [Lucid] (i386-pc-bsdi2.1) of Tue Jul 29 1997 on dolphin.automatrix.com

VM populates frames with a column of buttons along the left side of the
frame (next, previous, etc). I use VM in a two window configuration, with
the summary buffer displayed on top and the message buffer displayed below.
Sometimes when I switch buffers between the Summary buffer and something
else (for me, most often it's a forms-find-file command to view a small
database) the buttons along the left-hand side are erased, but the space is
not used by the new buffer, leaving a chunk of crud where the buttons used
to be. It appears that whatever decided to lay out the windows did so while
the buttons were still taking up space. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it
now that I'm reporting it. (I think this version of XEmacs must incorporate
some sort of insidious artificial intelligence and it's teasing me.)

This is not a new problem. I experienced it with 19.14 and 19.15 as well.
If someone has some ideas, I'll work harder at coming up with a reproducible
combination of commands.
