Ok, this is starting to get irritating, and I've finally tracked down
enough symptoms, I think... this started manifesting with gnus in beta
11.

Periodically, gnus sees fit to modify my .newsrc file such that I now
have entries such as the following:

pilot.programmer.pila:

Notice the lack of a number after the colon...

I can hand modify it to some number, and then next time it checks news
it changes it back again, which results in displaying the group (which
I've fully read) in the summary buffer with a '*' for the number of
unread messages.

It always manifests with the same groups, as well, which is weird. It
doesn't do it on all the groups at the same time, only periodically,
and sometimes it even manages to correct itself but it soon breaks it
again. This is getting really weird and I'm really frustrated. If
anyone has any ideas on even *where* I can start troubleshooting this,
I'd be grateful for the hint.

Again, this seemed to start manifesting only after beta 11.
