I agree.  The problem is that obsolete variables have been overloaded
to mean both Emacs variables we don't wish used anymore, and our own
variables which we have evolved from.  I do not feel we should issue
messages by default on Emacs compatible variables, save that for a
byte-compile-pedantic option.

I feel uncomfortable making changes in this area until I've examined
all the implications.
