kHz.

H4899-4906v SU FRECUENCIA MUSICAL AM, Quimbaya (Quindio). 27/8 at
2130 vallenato music, then "Cantares del campo"and advs for
Distribuidora Quimbaya, whose address tallies with the one listed
in the local telephone book (which is almost impossible to come
by in Bogota). On 29/8 at 2200 w/"Bailabilisimos del domingo".
Fundamental freq. is unknown.

H2396 ONDAS DEL RANCHERIA. Reported by Viloria in TRN #39, should be
located in Barrancas (Guajira). This town is located on the shores
of the river Rancheria.

In the telephone book for Antioquia (Medellin and Yarumal not
included: these two have separate telephone books), there are
at least 10 unlisted stations, many of which are operated by the local
church.
The number of "emisoras parroquiales" (Parrish broadcasters) may
be much greater then that, as some stations do not have a telephone,
via. 1530 ECOS DE PAZ at Angostura (Antioquia) which operates at
1730-2130 with a 0.1 kW transmitter to a quarter-wave dipole.
Another one, which has been active for 6 years, is the military run
BRISAS DEL PALMAR, at Caucasia (Antioquia), which operates all day on
1520, with 0.3 kW to a half-wave dipole. This station belongs to the
LA VOZ DE LOS HEROES network. The station is operated by soldiers of
the 29th Infantry batallion, located in a neighbourhood of Caucasia
called Barrio El Palmar. (Curiosly enough, on the same freq there is
another "Palmar" station, Ecos del Palmar from Bogota).

A 0.25 kW emisora parroquial that made it to Bogota its fundamental
freq is LA VOX DE ARANRORU, at Aranroru (Caldas), heard 29/8 until
s/off at 0049. The next day I phoned the station and was told by the
priest (Whose name is Jairo Salazar) that the stn operates Su-Fri in
the morning, at noon, and at dusk, on nominally 1600, which in fact
was 1601.4. The signal was clear and steady.

BOLIVIA. Letter received from RADIO LA PALABRA, run by Parroquia de
Santa Ana, Santa Ana de Yacuma (Beni). This finally cattles this
problem, which has kept me busy for months. Freq 4903.9 seems to be
temporarily off the air now. Manager is F. Yosu Arkera, who, judging
from his name is Basque. No shedule nor power was indicated in the
letter, dated 31 August 1993.

(Information received via Air Mail from Colombia to be published by
this way).

Subject: Ghana & tropical bands

That shortwave transmission are not easy to hear close to the
transmitter site is only true of the higher frequencies used by
international broadcasters. IBers use specialized antennas designed
for low-angle send-off, which means the signal travels quite a way
before it begins to bounce back down - and then again at a low angle.

The tropical bands are a different animal. First, tropical bands
propagate better at shorter distance. Second, these stations use
antennas that put a lot of the power into high angle sendoff, which
gives a more "coverage". As an example, when I lived in Honduras, I
had no problem receiving tropical band stations 50-400 miles away
throughout Central America - they were very strong. On the other
hand, when I lived in Pennsylvania in the 1970s, WINB with its 15185
frequency was very rare DX - I only managed it once or twice.

A lot of generalities are made about SW which are only true for the
international broadcasters & the higher frequencies. Another reason
as to the use of SW instead of MW in Ghana is that MW suffers from a
lot of static in the tropics - much more so than in the temperate
latitudes. For some reason the static is not nearly so band on SW as
on MW. Also, you can cover more territory with a lower powered (say
10 kW) SW tropical band frequency than you can with a higher power
(say 50 kW) MW one. Of course, this gets back to the fact that you
can hear tropical band frequencies close (50-400 miles) to the
transmitter.
