4779 I saw with very interest a logging from Tom Roach on 12/04

talking about R.Popular, Cuenca, Ecuador. I think this station

is out of the air some years ago. probably this heard was

Onda Musical from Dominican Republic or a change of fq. of

Radio Centinela del Sur from Ecuador. Please Tom try to

check this fq. again. Thanks. (MRL)

I'm having a bit of difficulty believing what you wrote here. First of

all, the radio spectrum is crowded enough - if in fact these station

are emitting harmonics they should be informed immediately so their 4th

or 7th or whatever harmonic does not interfere with some vital comms.

You might only be hearing the 2nd or 3rd harmonic - there might be

many more.

And copying a harmonic just doesn't seem as exciting as logging

the fundamental frequency. Do we need harmonics posted here on r.r.s?

Now, are you sure you are actually hearing harmonics? Could the problem

be with your receiver? Do you hear these `harmonics' on another
receiver?

Do you have a spectrum analysizer?

Your article has to be the weirdest post I've seen on here in the

last year.

From: Don Moore <MOORE@TMU1.MCREST.EDU>

Subject: Radio Tezulutlan

Gee, maybe this net needs a spelling teacher, hi! Correct spelling

of this station (misspelled in two other posts) is Tezulutlan.

Their 4835 frequency is probably the best heard Guatemalan frequency

in North America, and 3370 (which isn't always on the air) is often

pretty good, too. While the station uses some Spanish, most of the

programming is in the K'ekchi language, one of a number of Mayan

langs used in Guatemala. The K'ekchi are the fourth largest

indigenous group in Guatemala. They live more or less in the area

north and east of Coban (where the station is located). Although

K'ekchi (and all the Mayan langs) are phonetically very different

from Spanish, it is possible to confuse it for Spanish because a

large number of Spanish words have been borrowed.

The word "tezulutlan" means "land of war" in the K'ekchi tongue.

When the Spanish came into Guatemala in the 1520s, they quickly

subdued the Mayan tribes farther south, but could not defeat the

warlike K'ekchis, who maintained their independence for a time. The

region was given the name Tezulutlan by the Spanish. Later Fray

(Friar) Bartolome de las Casas persuaded the colonial government to

let him try to convert the K'ekchi to Catholocism. The colonial govt

forbade any other Spaniards except Fray Bartolome and his associates

from having any contact with the K'ekchi while this was going on.

The good friar was able to convince the Indians of his peaceful

intentions and in time converted a major chief who ordered all the

people in his area to convert. With assistance from this influential

chief, the friars gradually converted the remainder of the K'ekchis

and their region was renamed "Verapaz", a mixture of the Spanish

words "verdad" and "paz", or "true-peace". Of course, now that the

Indians were converted and peaceful, the colonial govt knew just what

to do - they sent in an army to enslave the Indians. Not an uncommon

story in Latin American history (or U.S. history, for that matter).

There is one other station that uses K'ekchi, Radio K'ekchi on 4845

kHz located in the small town of Fray Bartolome de las Casas, near

Coban. While the town is named after the man who converted the

K'ekchi to Catholicism, the station is run by K'ekchi Evangelist

Protestants who are trying to convert their fellow tribesmen away

from Catholicism. A bit ironic. Radio Tezulutlan, by the way, is

run by the Roman Catholic church, so the two stations are involved in

a friendly battle for souls.

The most common kind of music on Guatemalan stations is marimba

music. The marimba is similar to a xylophone, except the keys are

made of wood rather than metal. The instrument made its way to

Guatemala from Africa in colonial days and the Indians adopted it and

changed it to their liking. The music is quite beautiful and very

upbeat. They are also very large. At minimum, a marimba is played

by three people. Longer ones require as many as eight or nine

players. (Perhaps more, but that's the most I've seen.) Although

the marimba is most associated with Guatemala, it is common

throughout Central America and adjoining areas of southern Mexico.

There is also a small pocket of marimba use in the Esmeraldas area in

northwestern Ecuador, although how the marimba made its way there, I

don't know. Marimbas are very versatile. I remember one party in

Honduras with a 8-man marimba where they played everything from

traditional tunes to waltzes and even "The Twist". Quite an

experience dancing to "The Twist" played on a marimba! So was the

waltzing, for that matter.

I have noticed other types of more traditional indigenous music on

Radio Tezulutlan frequently - at least much more often than other

Guatemalan stations. Other types of music feature local types of

flutes, harps, and drums. Some of it is quite pretty, but rather

monotanous. I have some tapes of it given to me by the station on my

visit to Coban in 1983. The station was rather modern and

well-run compared to most Guatemalan and Central American stations.
