3334.990

Other highlights were RFO Tahiti on 6135.310 kHz at 08:19 UTC
10/23/93, and on 5643 USB (ICAO South Pacific) heard Aukland, Sydney,
Tahiti and numerous aircraft. Made a special effort to hear Tennant
Creek, Australia and R. Rum Jungle (2325 kHz and 2485 kHz respectively)
after their 08:30 sign-on(s). At 08:48 Tennant Creek was clearly
readable (and recorded), but R.Rum Jungle was not at all readable but
the BFO and Spectrum Analyzer confirmed its presence. Winter listening
is starting off on a good note.

4775 SIKKIM (INDIA): AIR Gangtok first-noted w/fair carrier at 1145
when at the same time, AIR Imphal-4760, also in the nearby NE
region, was fair and well-over co-channel Chinese with sub-
continental vocal. Retuned 4775 at 1210 to find chants, talk
by OM w/brief instrumental breaks - sounded very much like a
religious pgme. Choral at 1218 and further impassioned talk by
OM until 1231. YL with almost certain ID "...Gangtok", then OM+YL
anmts, indigenous instrumental interlude and different OM into
possible local news at 1232-37. Then vocal selection and back
to OM talk at 1240. Very good signal peak at 1215-30 on direct
path from NE;thereafter slowly weakening w/best signal arrival
swung around to the NW. Still weakly audible at 1255. Best on
LSB due to periodic CW ute on high side.

Gangtok perhaps still in test phase - definitely not on air the
prior Sun (Oct 24) which also rendered quite good sub-continental
signals. AIR Guwahati, formerly 4775.5v and sked to 1215* may now
be on 4990 per announced bandplan. Oct 31 (DMC)

9660 AUSTRALIA: VLQ9 Brisbane good at 1301 with world news, different
than ABC news concurrently fair on VLW9 Wanneroo-9610, both mixed
with co-channel QRM. Per report on WOR, VLQ9 has confirmed it will
be leaving the air on Dec 31st; perhaps this will mark the demise
of VLM4 Brisbane-4920 too. A recent edition of RNMN questioned
whether VLW9 had already left the air but it's on, at least for
the
present. Perth has been gone for some time - the entire Domestic
Shortwave Service may well be on the way out. Oct 31 (DMC)

AIR Gangtok-4775 was NOT on this past weekend...makes me all the
happier about my Oct 31st log but they'll be back - I suspect they
must still be irregular - possibly in test mode.

Subject: Papua New Guinea

Some weeks ago there was some discussion about the possible
destruction of radio stations in Papua due to the recent earthquake.
Last week-end there were relatively good conditions towards PNG
thanks to the minor geomagnetic storm some days earlier. Australian
staions were heard with strong signals on 2310, 2325, 2485 and 4920
kHz.
Stns from PNG were audible on following frequencies: 3205, 3235, 3245
(strong), 3275, 3305, 3315 and 4890 kHz. Stn's on 3220 and 3325 were
blocked by Chinese stn's. None of these Papua stn were identified but
program style and conditions indicate that they were from PNG.
