Notes regarding the NIC data files for LSC/LBS
----------------------------------------------
The files contained in this archive are meant to replace the standard LSC
data files when using LSC and LBS for the North Island Campaign module of
Legends. These files are compatible with version 4.0.0 of LSC and version
2.0.0 of LBS and the same files can be used with either the Amiga or MS-DOS
versions.

Files:
------
The files contained in the archive are:

                READ_NIC.TXT - This file.
                MOUNTS.NIC - NIC mounts.
                RACES.NIC - NIC standard races.
                WEAPONS.NIC - NIC weapons.

Installation:
-------------
The files with extension .NIC have to be copied over with extension .LSC,
replacing the existing files with the same names. All of the .LSC files
have to be in the current directory when you run LSC or LBS.

As discussed in the LSC manual, I recommend creating a separate directory
for each NIC game that you are playing. If you do that, then copy all of
the .NIC files to that directory and rename them with the .LSC extension,
then copy the other .LSC files there also.

WARNINGS:
---------
The data files contain only the basic information from the module rulebook.
Thus the CF, DF, AF, and terrain information can be considered correct
(unless I have made an incorrect entry). However, the MAD, SAD, SAV, DAM,
and INV information for each race is not given in either the rulebooks or
the module rulebook and must be determined through play. I have put in a
couple of numbers determined from NIC-8, but the remainder have either been
left with the numbers from COA or are completely unknown. Since these
hidden numbers could conceivably change between games, it is important that
you verify the numbers with actual battle reports before relying on the
simulator. Remember, a 1 point difference in INV/DAM can make a
significant 50% difference in the effective DF of enemy soldiers, so be
cautious.

The simulator does not account for weapons with bonuses against mounted
soldiers. You can partly accomodate this by putting in the appropriate AFB
for each slot in the legion description file, but the accuracy will depend
on whether you face all mounted soldiers or a mix of cavalry and infantry.
How the bleed damage would be calculated is anyone's guess.

You have to have all the data files available to run LSC, but the STATUS.LSC
file contains COA statuses. Don't trust these numbers for NIC, and if you
figure out some of the NIC numbers don't trust them too much in different
games. I will try to provide some NIC specific status information in the
future, but the same caveats will apply since I am personally playing in
only one NIC game.

MISCELLANEOUS:
--------------
In order to maintain one set of files and reduce the size of the archive, I
am providing the same files for both Amiga and MS-DOS users, using the Amiga
files. They will work as they are on either machine, but because they are
text files, DOS users might experience something strange when trying to
view or edit them. This is the explanation: the Amiga terminates lines of
text with a Linefeed character, whereas DOS uses a Carriage Return-Linefeed
combination. The Amiga version of LSC chokes on the CR in the DOS text
files, but the DOS version doesn't miss them. Your editor, however, might
feel differently about it. The MS-DOS EDIT command doesn't have a problem
with it either, so you can use that editor to view and edit the files. If
you prefer to do it with something else, you can add the CR characters by
loading the files into EDIT and saving them, then using the editor of your
choice.

I would appreciate updates, corrections, and additional data. Send it to
Mark Nuiver at CIS 72217,3170 so that I can include it in the next update.
Thanks!
