By Carlo Fusco <cfusco@edu.uwo.ca>

About The Beer Formula Calculator:

The beer formula calculator was developed by myself from an article in Brewing Techniques (vol.1, no.1) written by Karl King. I really liked what Karl did but his methods and formulas did not suit my needs. Originally, I wanted a formula calculator that contained all the information that I needed on a single printed page, however, with input from other brewers, especially Glenn Tinseth, I ended up modifying this initial spreadsheet and I developed The Beer Formula Calculator 2.0 (metric). I am now offering my spreadsheet to the public.

What you need to use it:

All you need is Microsoft Excel version 5.0 to run this spreadsheet. With version 5.0 you have the added advantage of creating a workbook that can contain all your recipes in a single workbook.

Postcardware/Donationware:

The Beer Formula Calculator 2.0 (metric) is postcardware. If you find that you like this Calculator, you can send me a postcard from your hometown so I can see where this calculator has gone.

Please send the postcard to:

The Beer Formula Calculator 2.0 (metric) is also donationware. If you find that you really like the Calculator and you have some cash you can spare, please send a $5.00 donation to:

Other Stuff:

Usual disclaimer stuff goes here. You know what that is :)

1.0 The Beer Formula Calculator had a tendency to overestimate the IBU value of your beer. With the assistance of Glenn Tinseth, I was able to overcome this problem. The IBU calculation in version 1.3 is the best calculation method available at this time.

1.1 some bug fixes.

1.2 some more bug fixes.

1.3 The colour calculation in this spreadsheet is accurate up to 10 degrees Lovibond. After 10 degrees I used a logarithmic equation that represents a normal colour curve, however, I have found that values over 25 degrees Lovibond are underestimated. In other words, for colour values greater than 25 degrees, the colour of you beer will be darker than the spreadsheet reports.

2.0 Revamped the calculator to metric, added more hop addition spaces, added some water treatment stuff, added a converter. I am now really endebted to Glenn Tinseth with his continued help in getting this calculator bug free. This is an Excel 5.0 spreadsheet, other spreadsheet users may encounder dificulties with the hop IBU calculation. If you find that it doesn't work it is probably due to the hypetan function in the IBU calculation.

Please feel free to distribute this spreadsheet, but please keep this document with it. If you modify this spreadsheet, please send me a copy and keep this document with the modified version. Thanks.

Included in this package is this readme file and a Excel 5.0 version of The Beer Formula Calculator 2.0 (metric).

Cheers

HOW LONG HAS CABA BEEN AROUND AND WHAT HAS IT DONE?

CABA was started in 1984 as a forum for homebrewers, both novice and experienced, to exchange ideas, skills and their love of homebrewing. Since then annual conferences, competitions and tastings have been organized.

CABA produces a newsletter every two months to keep its members informed of recent events, club news, and a members forum which allows members to voice concerns, ask questions and to get answers.

CABA also has mail in competitions and organizes judging training seminars to be part of an ongoing educational program.

In October of 1990, the first Board of Directors was elected from the membership. Board elections are held annually in the Fall.

For less than the savings from a single batch of homebrew, you can enroll in the only national club in Canada which will help you brew better beer.
