*** TIS/MOSS Version 7.1 --- September 1995

The name of the package has been changed to match that of the
standard. PEM only provides security services for text-based
messages. MOSS, which is what we have implemented since version 7.0,
provides security services for MIME objects.

This version of TIS/MOSS includes changes to maintain compatibility with
the MOSS Internet standard, additional functionality, better
portability, bug fixes, and improved performance. The source tree has
gone through some reorganization and file names have been changed for
both portability and consistency.

RSAREF is no longer bundled with this distribution. If you don't
already have an RSAREF 2.0 library for your system, you must obtain the
source via anonymous ftp from ftp.rsa.com and build it.

The names for the default database and runtime customization file have
changed from .pemdb and .pemrc to .mossdb and .mossrc, respectively.
Users of TIS/PEM 7.0 must rename their files.

The names of the MIME objects used by MOSS have been changed from
pem-signature and pem-keys to moss-signature and moss-keys. Other
than that, TIS/MOSS 7.1 is compatible with TIS/PEM 7.0. To maintain
backward compatibility with messages created under TIS/PEM 7.0, those
using the TIS/MOSS-MH integration will want to include mhn rules for
both pem- and moss- objects in their .mh_profile file.

*** TIS/PEM Version 7.0 --- October 1994

Much has changed in this new, improved version of TIS/PEM.

o single-user operation with executables that can be shared
o per-user ASCII (human-readable) databases
o support for multiple databases
o support for both certificates and bare public keys
o flexible trust model
o signature, verification, encryption, and decryption services are provided
by their own programs and functions, making integration with other mail
  user agents straightforward
o support for MIME-PEM integration
o administrative functions are handled by several scriptable applications
and much can be done using standard text processing tools
o less reliance on UNIX-specific features
o easier installation
o faster processing

Because of the new database format, users of all versions of TIS/PEM prior
to 7.0 must export their registrations using the existing TIS/PEM cai
program if they wish to use the same certificates/key pairs in TIS/PEM 7.0.
The pemdbconv program will convert exported registrations to user records in
a database file and a private key file.

Other certificates in the TIS/PEM database can be converted to user records
in a database file by using pemdbconv to process the cfiles in the old
PEMDATA/CERTDIR directly. This will not convert any associated private
keys, however. Owners of private keys must convert them themselves.

TIS/PEM Version 7.0 Beta --- October 1994

o the usual bug fixes and cleanup
o pemlog* programs have defaults instead of requiring arguments
o a new option has been added to support always encrypting for originator
o change hashalg to micalg

TIS/PEM Version 7.0 Alpha --- September 1994

o various versions have fixed the usual bugs and cleanup

*** TIS/PEM Version 6.1.0 (29 October 1993)

must upgrade as this version fixes bugs that may cause interoperability
problems with older versions.

*** TIS/PEM Versions 6.0.1 & 6.0.2

These versions contained incompatible, incorrect fixes for the improperly
generated CRLs produced by 6.0.

*** TIS/PEM Version 6.0 (2 June 1993)

This is the first official release of TIS/PEM to the Internet community.
