0. importante note

   If you want to install KGMD, you HAVE to read this WHOLE text
   before doing anything.

1. What is KGMD?

   KGMD is the german MINT distribution Knarf. With this
   distribution, every Atari user should be able to install a clean 
   Mint environment.
   The multitasking will be as perfect as possible, and after the
   installation everyone should feel their atari is just like a true 
   Unix machine.
   One of the rules for this distribution is:
   No binary files without the corresponding source file.
   For every binary file the diffs are available.
   Everyone thus can reproduce the binary files. For some people 
   this is not important ("under TOS I don't have the sources?"), 
   other think it's important.

   The programs whose sources are not freely available are not in 
   this distribution.

2. why KGMD?

   KGMD has been created, because more and more users are 
   interested in MINT, but the documentation is relatively poor
   (Alle Speicher gespuelt(Novell),Alle Dateien nicht loeschen? N/J (MS-DOS),
   Meinen Sie '='oder'=='? (SINIX C-Compiler), Kellerspeicher ueberflutet, ...).

   Through a weak documentation, alot of users failed the 
   installation for this compiler. Without it, you can not work under 
    MINT.
   ???Es wird eben meistens davon ausgegangen, dass man sich bereits mit UNIX
   beschaeftigt hat. Letzteres ist natuerlich auch bei dieser Distribution von grossem
   Vorteil, aber es ist nicht Bedingung.???
   Also, because of the numerous files needed for a complete 
   installation, it's hard to keep a good global overview.
   Only few anonymous FTPs put all the files for the interested 
   users. The MailBoxes, most of the time, don't have the storage 
   capacity for such amount of data.
   Besides in most of the MailBoxes, the files are in the 8+3 format, 
   which leads to losing some information.

3. What do you need ?

   It's always hard to answer this question. Theorically,
   MiNT should run on every atari computers.
   Actually, to be able to work comfortably with KGMD, the following 
   configuration is necessary:

   - 4 Mb Ram
   - a free partition in your hard drive, which once KGMD installed, 
     the room left should be at least 10Mb to work.
     After installation, the different parts of the kit take the 
     following room:

     - Basic   12 Mb (minimum required)
     - Compiler 7 Mb
     - Manual   6 Mb
     - Net      4 Mb (minimum required)
     - X11     14 Mb 

   The speed of your computer is very important too.
   However, MINT is usable on a plain ST at 8MHz. Some people will 
   notice the slowness for the compilation,
   ???aber fast keine Anwendung verlaesst sich auf eine bestimmte
   Rechnergeschwindigkeit. Lediglich die Ansteuerung der seriellen
   Schnittstelle(n) birgt auf langsamen Rechnern Probleme.???

4.  What to do before starting the installation?

   - Firstly, a big partition has to be free for the installation   
     This partition must be a GEMDOS partition to work, so the 
     letter of the corresponding drive should be accessible on the 
     desktop.
     While the installation, this partition will be converted in a    
     Minix partition, that means, " ALL THE DATA ON THIS PARTITION 
     WILL BE LOST"!!!

   - The individual packets of the distribution (basic, manual,
     compiler, net et x11) will be copied in any directory in the 
     hard drive. PLEASE write down the path, it will be asked further 
     in the installation.
     
     These big archives are called something like basic.aa, basic.ab, 
     etc..
     They will automatically be reassembled while the installation.
     For a minimal work, only the basic archive is necessary.
     The installed packets will be the only ones present in the 
     directory that you'll indicate. Thus, if you don't want some 
     parts of the distribution, don't put them in the directory.

   - Copy the archive `instflpy.zoo'  on a blank floppy
     If you don't have, yet, any bootdisk (minimint).
     You can also copy this archive in a harddisk directory.
     Double-check this partition of your Hard disk doesn't have any 
     file called something like *.XDD in the directory     
     `<drive>:\', `<drive>:\MINT\' et `<drive>:\MULTITOS!
     Otherwise these drivers will be loaded while the installation   
     and that could be very annoying for the installation process.

   - Start your computer again without any auto program or accessory.
     Only the hard disk driver is necessary. A bootselector will be 
     helpfull.

   - From the desktop, run KGMDINST.TOS of your boot floppydisk  
     or from your installation directory, file created while the 
     uncompress process of instflpy.zoo.  A dynamic Ramdisk is 
     automatically created in which all the necessary files to the 
     installation utilities will be copied.
     All the installation is handled by the installation script, you 
     only have to answer a few questions.

     Once the installation done, you'll be under a shell. From 
     there you'll finnish the last part of the installation.

   - On the newly created Minix partition, a directory called  `boot' 
     should be present. There are also 2 others directories called 
     'auto' and 'multitos'.
     In the directory `auto' there are 2 MINT programs:
     `mint.prg` et `mint030.prg'.
     Copy one of these 2 programs in your directory 'auto'.
     If you use a FALCON or a TT, use 'MINT030.Prg' otherwise 
     'MINT.Prg'.
     Rename the auto prg MINT in the directory 'auto', for instance 
     `mintkgmd.prg'. Like that it's more precise.

     Let's say you have a TT and the the `f' partition is the
     Minix partition, Enter the following commands:

     # cd /f/boot/auto
     # cp mint030.prg /c/auto/mintkgmd.prg

     Now, go into the `multitos' directory. From this directory you'll
     copy `init.prg' program, the `minix.xfs driver and the 
     configuration file `mintkgmd.cnf` in /usr/multitos (a symbolic
     link on the Multitos directory for the boot drive).
     The other files are not necessary yet.

     # cd /f/boot/multitos
     # cp init.prg minix.xfs mintkgmd.cnf /usr/multitos


     Double check there is no Mint directory on the boot drive 
     (usually C:), as well as on the root of C: there is no such file 
     like  'mint.cnf', '*.xfs' or '*.xdd'.

     You should install a boot selector (for instance: XBOOT, Stoop 
     or superboot), make sure the boot selector is the first 
     program in the auto folder ( "view unsorted" to see the real 
     order. To set the order of the program execution there is 
     AUTOSORT for instance) and now you can reboot.
     Create a new configuration with the boot selector called for 
     instance     'KGMD' .
     Include the program `mintkgmd.prg'.

     I would also suggest you to include the program HSMODEM which 
     must be run *BEFORE* Mint. All the auto programs are still 
     there in this new configuration but are not used.
     Make sure the file 'mintkgmd.cnf' has been copied under the name 
     'mint.cnf'.

     If you don't use a boot selector, just copy the file 
     `mintkgmd.cnf' in  /usr/multitos under the name 'mint.cnf':

     # cd /usr/multitos
     # cp mintkgmd.cnf mint.cnf

     Activate, if necessary, HSMODEM in the auto folder:

     # cd /c/auto
     # mv drvin.prx drvin.prg
     # mv mfp.prx mfp.prg
     # [etc...]

     You'll notice, in the AUTO folder, the programs physically placed
     after `mintkgmd.prg' won't be loaded .
     This feature is normal and wanted. The Falcon users who want to 
     use BlowUp must rename 'Mintkgmd.prg' into 'mint.prg' or  
     'mintnp.prg'.

     After the reboot, you shouldn't be worried if you see a 
     description of the boot process followed by a Login-Prompt. 
     Remember, at the end of the installation program, you typed for 
     'root' and 'normal user' a password for both of them.
     Browse a little bit in the directory tree, read the help 
     file in /usr/src/KGMD and you'll learn about this new system.
     Try some of the key-combinations ALT-F1 to ALT-F10 and take a 
     look in the  /etc/ttytab directory.
     Try to boot again to understand, after having read the files   
     usr/multitos/mintkgmd.cnf and /etc/rc*.
     Copy, if necessary, some new drivers from your 'boot' directory 
     from your Minix partition to your boot-drive.
     Take a closer look at the /etc/*.sample file and configure it 
     for your local conditions( I guess your own environment?), 
     especially the /etc/fstab file.

5. What you should do or maintain after the installation.

   Here are few things to consider. Firstly, few wrong ideas will be 
   corrected. Even if it's hard to accept them, they are simple.   

   - The GEM takes a lot of RAM (memory), processing time and the 
     system is not really reliable. The GEM will only be launched 
     when you need it.
   - For Multitos, same remark.
   - It's impossible to stop these 2 programs, meaning that after 
     'GEM', you'll need to reboot.

   - The mouse will not be used. We'll learn that, with a text editor 
      ???umzugehen??? which seems to be complicated, but later on 
     will be very handy and fast after using it and get used to, 
     until the point when you'll ask yourself:" how much could I sell 
     my mouse?".

   - The drive letters and the backslashes (\) in the pathnames are 
     absolutely taboo. You will only work on the drive U:

   - ???Abenteuerliche Konstrukte aus der DOSen Welt, wie etwa *.* sind
     schlicht und ergreifend aus dem Gedaechtnis zu streichen.
     Wildcards und Regular Expressions funktionieren nach Regeln,
     nicht nach Mondstand. Merke: *.* passt auf READ.ME, nicht aber
     auf README.???

   - For the end of lines we'll use LF instead of the Atari CRLF.

   - ???Der zu verwendende Zeichensatz ist ISO-8859-1. Die Virtuellen
     Consolen stellen diesen Zeichensatz zur Verfuegung. Eine
     Codierung nach irgendeiner aus der Luft gegriffenen,
     modifizierten IBM Codepage ist nicht erwuenscht.???

   - In every case, the file compression will be a combination of 
     'Detar' and  Gzip, these are the only good and safe 
     possibilities to work with.
     In extreme cases, you can also use ZOO, but the other packers
     (like STZIP or LHARC) are totally unusable  

   - Work under 'ROOT' only if it's absolutely necessary.
     Use `su' instead logging as root. Thus, you'll be very safe.

6. Doing some modifications on the distribution:

  -  To install your own programs on the Minix Minix, use the 
     tree directory /usr/local!

   - Only make changes on the installed files if you know EXACTLY 
   	what you are doing. WRITE DOWN all the changes you are making.

   - Write the configuration file changes under /etc.

   - If you follow these rules, you will not have any problems 
     installing future versions. Do changes only in the /home
     and /usr/local and only if necessary.
     Few files under /etc and /var need to be saved, thus it will 
     allow you to become accustomed for a future installation.
