Congratulations on obtaining NCSA Layout 1.2b1 for the color 
Macintosh!  NOTE:  This is not a beta release!  This is the final
release for Layout.  Layout 1.2b1 and Layout 1.2 are the same!

This is a graphics editing package that allows the user to create 
professional quality color Layouts of scientific data with the ability to 
add annotations, grid lines, and tick marks.  New features in NCSA 
Layout 1.2b1 include copy and pasting to the clip board between most 
other applications, and the ability to read and write Macintosh PICT 
files.

This distribution includes documentation in Microsoft Word format. 
If you have Microsoft Word, then you can print the manual yourself. 
If not, you can also buy the hard copy manual from NCSA.  It's in the 
NCSA Technical Resources catalog.

THIS DISTRIBUTION

All files except README.LAYOUT are binhexed using Binhex v4.0 and 
may be unbinhexed using the Binhex v4.0 or later, or StuffIt v1.3 or 
later.  Most of the files were stuffed using StuffIt 1.50 and must be 
unstuffed using UnStuffIt 1.50.  There is a copy of UnStuffIt 1.50 on 
the FTP server under /Mac.  The distribution includes:

1) Layout1.2b1.hqx - This application only needs to be 
unbinhexed (it is not stuffed).

2) doc12.sit.hqx - This is the Layout 1.2 manual in Microsoft Word 
format.  The manual consists of several chapters in different files.  
These files were all archived using StuffIt 1.50 and then binhexed.  
Use UnStuffIt 1.50 to retrieve the files.

3) exmp.sit.hqx - This is an archive of sample Layouts, images, 
and palettes.  The Layouts include "Shock Wave" and 
"vortex2.layout".  "Shock Wave" is described in the Tutorial section of 
the documentation.  "vortex2.layout" is an example of what can be 
created demonstrating the pasting abilities of NCSA Layout 1.2b1.  The 
drawing annotations were created in MacDraw and pasted into NCSA 
Layout.  The images folder contain two examples of images that can 
be loaded into NCSA Layout 1.2b1.  The palettes folder contains several 
example palettes.  These files were also archived using StuffIt 1.50 
and then binhexed.  Use UnStuffIt 1.50 to retrieve the files.


4) LOsrc.sit.hqx - This is the source code for NCSA Layout 
1.2b1.  It includes the source and make files for the application, the 
color menu definition, and HDF file routines.  The source code was 
compiled using MPW 3.0.  These files were also archived using 
StuffIt 1.50 and then binhexed.  Use UnStuffIt 1.50 to retrieve the 
files.

BUG LIST and Needed Improvements

Undo is always dimmed.  This is because you cannot undo.  Sorry!

File error checking is not as thorough as it should be.  Not all file 
errors are reported to the user (i.e. disk full).

The color pop up menus do not work properly with the init 
"ScrollMBar".
