I am pleased to confirm that the revised Provisional Placings
published on the 3rd of September can stand. A copy is appended for
your records in case you haven't got one. Chris has reviewed all
solutions provided and agrees with the assessments. Congratulations
to Auckland for good wins in both divisions, and congratulations to
all others for giving them competition.

I have prepared a Press Release and sent it out today in the hope of
reaching The Dominion, and Computerworld in particular for their
issues next Monday. A copy is appended also for your information.

It only remains to thank you for your help in organising this year's
event, and to encourage your participation in the South Pacific
Regional contest in November, and in the 1992 series of contests.

Press Release.

Headline: Auckland Successes in New Zealand Programming Competition.

The New Zealand Programming Competition was held as a simultaneous
event in Dunedin, Palmerston North, Auckland, and Melbourne on
Saturday, 31 August 1991. As in recent competitions of this type,
eight problems were provided for solution in this five hour contest.
Teams of three students from Universities and Polytechnics were
provided with a single computer on which to develop their solutions.
The contest was organised into two divisions with Division 1 having a
more difficult set of problems than Division 2. Communication
between the sites was maintained by phones and fax machines.
Preliminary results were obtained on the Saturday evening, but had to
be confirmed by the Head Judge going over all solutions from each of
the four sites in the following ten days to ensure consistency of
grading. Time penalties were applied for submissions not meeting the
judge's criteria.

In Division 1, there were 3 teams who solved a creditable 6 problems,
and the team "The Men from U.N.I.X" (consisting of Robert O'Callahan,
Michael Tantrum, and Colin Goghill all second year Computer Science
and Mathematics students at the University of Auckland) came first
with an elapsed time of 926 minutes. They were closely followed by
two teams from the University of Otago ("Bob!", and "K.C.A.H.") with
elapsed times of 1044 and 1203 minutes respectively. Teams from
Victoria and Otago completed four problems. All but one of the 26
teams completed at least one problem.

In Division 2, the team "HeSpRo" from the University of Auckland was
a clear winner with all 8 problems completed. Two other teams from
the University of Auckland ("1001011" and "The Masked Interrupts")
completed 5 problems. All of the 17 teams in Division 2 completed
two or more problems.

A feature of this year's competition was the use of four sites, and
for the first time, one in Australia. By reducing travel costs this
enabled more teams to participate. Teams came from 8 universities
and 5 Polytechnics for the contest. An even wider range of teams is
expected in 1992, and possibly a separate Australian competition.

To be consistent with subsequent international competitions, teams
were reduced this year from 4 to 3 members, only one of which could
be a graduate. Many of the teams are now looking forward to
participating in the South Pacific Regional Contest to be held in
Auckland on the 23rd of November, and if they win that, to the final
of the ACM Scholastic Programming Competition. Readers may recall
that teams from New Zealand have done very well in that competition
in recent years with a team from the University of Otago taking first
place in this international event in 1990, and a team from Victoria
University taking fourth place in 1991. Will a team from Australasia
get first place in 1992?
